ORACLE Independent Study is an alternative to classroom instruction for students whose educational needs cannot be met through traditional programs. Students are referred by the Juvenile Probation Department, School Attendance Review Boards, or their local school district.

ORACLE provides a complete state-approved curriculum, individualized to each student's abilities and goals. Students earn high school credits by completing academic assignments and meeting with certificated teaching staff at weekly appointments. They use community resources for special research projects, field trips, and volunteer work. Additional support is provided through a Study Hall program, access to an on-site computer lab and to individual math tutoring. A special curriculum is offered for pregnant and parenting teens.

Introduction to ORACLE Independent Study

Independent Study is an option for individual instruction by credentialed teachers, as an alternative to classroom instruction for students whose needs are not met in traditional school programs.

Oracle was established by the Marin County Office of Education Alternative Education Programs in 1987 and provides a complete state-approved curriculum. Students gain academic credits based on their completed homework assignments to earn a regular high school diploma or to make up credits and return to their district school. Regular meetings with teachers using one-on-one instruction, plus additional weekly tutoring in Math and Writing Skills are designed to give students maximum academic support.

Independent Study allows students to pursue educational opportunities outside the classroom, but within the framework of a written agreement between teacher, student and parent. Oracle students can enroll for credits in community colleges and vocational classes; they can prepare for and take the GED or California High School Proficiency Exams; they can earn credits through sports programs, travel, part-time jobs (Work Experience) or volunteer work.

Oracle features a special curriculum for pregnant minors and parenting teens, emphasizing parenting skills along with academics. Health studies teach pregnancy prevention and AIDS awareness.

The Oracle staff works closely with parents, school districts and counselors, and juvenile probation officers to provide the best choice for students.

Admission to Oracle Independent Study

Students must request and cannot be placed in Independent Study. Students who are expelled or SARB-referred to the County Community School Programs may be recommended for Independent Study by their district Student Attendance Review Board, but the County Office’s Centralized Intake Team (CIT) makes the final decision.
