The new law is named after Thomas Lanni, a child who was tragically killed in southern California when hit by a truck as he unexpectedly darted across the street after getting off a school bus.

The law requires traffic to stop in both directions when a school bus is stopped on an undivided road and flashes its red lights. This practice will make it safer for children who ride school buses, and helps everyone guard against repeating the tragedy of Thomas Lanni. The law went into effect on January 1, 1998.

We are working closely together to:

Ensure bus stops are located in safe places;
Reorganize traffic flow in school parking lots;
Educate our children about safe practices for crossing streets and boarding/exiting school buses;
Educate the public of the need to respect and follow this new law; and
Minimize the potential for related traffic congestion on our streets.
