On January 30, 2006, the 16th District PTA, Marin County School/Law Enforcement Partnership and the Marin County Office of Education presented a community forum addressing the issues surrounding teen substance abuse. Five panelists representing law enforcement, education, Marin County Department of Health and Human Services, parents and students addressed critical issues including trends in our county, identification, addiction and recovery, communication strategies for prevention, legal responsibilities of parents/guardians, loss of a loved one in addition to providing community resources for treatment. The presentation was teleconferenced to three additional sites at Redwood High School, Sir Francis Drake High School and Hill Middle School. Parent awareness, education and support are critical components in the prevention of drug and alcohol use and abuse by our children. The message is clear - we cannot do it alone. Parents, educators, law enforcement and community agencies must partner and work together to ensure our schools, homes and communities are healthy environments in which our children can grow and learn. Marin County is very fortunate to have hard working and dedicated collaboratives committed to this vital effort. |
